Study of 11C-L-Methionine Uptake in Brain Gliomas by Positron Emission Tomography: Metabolic Grading, and Effects of Radiotherapy and Intra-Arterial Chemotherapy

Abstract

The treatment of gliomas remains very disappointing, in spite of a bulk of experimental data and randomized trials over the last years. The inaccuracy of our current methods to investigate the local metabolism of these tumors might partly explain this therapeutic failure. The use of positron emission tomography (PET) provides a promissing insight in this field. It allows measuring some physiological and biochemical parameters in the tumorous and peritumoral tissue, and the modification of these parameters after treatment. Many approaches of the tumoral metabolism are possible with PET. We report here our study of intraluminal 11C-L-methionine captation in brain gliomas, in three situations:
  • assessment of the histological grade;

  • assessment of the radiotherapy effects;

  • assessment of the intraarterial chemotherapy effects.
