The echographic evaluation of spontaneous vitreous hemorrhage

  • Chapter
Ophthalmic Echography

Part of the book series: Documenta Ophthalmologica Proceedings Series ((DOPS,volume 48))

Abstract

The causes of spontaneous vitreous hemorrhage are well known. The frequency of the various etiologies of these hemorrhages has been reported by several authors (Winslow, ’80, Butner, ’82, Morse, ’74). Diabetes has been shown to be the most common cause of spontaneous vitreous hemorrhage, with the second and third most common causes retinal tears and rhegmatogenous retinal detachments. The density of the hemorrhages in these cases varied from microscopic blood to very dense hemorrhage. Echographic examination of these latter cases is usually performed to evaluate the posterior segment.
