Ultrasonic measurement of transverse lens diameter during accommodation in emmetropic and myopic eyes

Abstract

A new method is introduced which makes possible in vivo measurement of transverse lens diameter (T.L.D.) with ultrasound for the first time. This method was found to be reliable when ultrasonic and optical measurements of T.L.D. were compared in both eyes of an aniridic subject. Horizontal T.L.D. was measured for 7 emmetropic and 7 myopic subjects at 0, 2, 4, 6 and 8 dioptres of stimulus to accommodation. Unaccommodated T.L.D. was directly proportional to the refractive error, axial length, anterior chamber depth and sagittal lens thickness. T.L.D. changed more per dioptre of stimulus in myopic than in emmetropic eyes. The mean unaccommodated T.L.D. was found to be larger than in-vitro measurements reported in the literature.
