Abstract

In vivo ultrasonic measurement of fetal eyeball diameter has been performed in 516 women from the 10th to the 40th week of pregnancy. Using the method of the ‘best-fit’ curve, a logarithmic growth curve of the type y = a + b lnx has been determined.

Th growth curve obtained shows a regular increase of fetal eye diameter; the mean values for each week of pregnancy are slightly higher than those previously reported from anatomical measurements in aborted fetuses. The confidence interval and the measurement interval of this logarithmic curve have been determined in order to formulate a guide for detecting gross abnormalities of fetal eye development during pregnancy.
