Abstract
Of the many factors implicated in the genesis and maintenance of elevated arterial pressure, the pulsatile function of the arterial system has received little attention in comparison to other cardiovascular related phenomena such as increase in peripheral resistance, regulation of cardiac output, the role of the autonomic nervous system, glomerular filtration and the renin-angiotensin axis. This, despite the fact that ventricular ejection is by necessity intermittent, generating a pulsatile aortic pressure wave which is propagated throughout the arterial vasculature at a finite speed.
