Abstract

There is conflicting evidence about the role which the peripheral sympathetic nervous system plays in drug-induced malignant hyperthermia and very little information on the possible involvement of the central nervous system. In this study, the concentrations of noradrenaline, dopamine and their non-O-methylated metabolites were examined in two regions of the brain, the hypothalamus and the corpus striatum. Differences between MH susceptible and non-susceptible animals were found only in the concentrations of two metabolites. The activity of monoamine oxidase in the hypothalamus, corpus striatum, liver, kidney, heart, skeletal muscle and intestinal mucosa, and of catechol-O-methyl transferase in kidney were not significantly different between the two types of animal.
