Abstract

The ability to predict whether or not, where and when metastasis will occur, is a major challenge for the oncologist who in most cases can successfully remove the primary tumor. The assumption that the more we know about the biology of metastasis the more likely we are to give patients an optimal treatment seems reasonable. The possibility of obtaining reliable quantitative data in humans is limited by ethical considerations and technical difficulties, therefore animal and in vitro models are mostly utilized in the study of the metastatic process. The suitability of these models to improve our knowledge of metastasis in humans worries the experimentalist and fosters perplexity in the clinician. At this time there are no better alternatives than sorting out similarities and contradictions between the experimental findings and the clinical reality. One can at least hope that the experimental data on the biological characteristics of metastasis will help to prevent ineffectual or dangerous treatments based on misconceptions. The objective of this presentation is to discuss some experimental findings that may help in reaching this goal and to present a working hypothesis on conditions that may favour metastatic growth as surmised from our work on angiogenesis.
