Abstract

In 1963 Feyrter and Hartmann described two cases of argyrophilic breast carcinomas and suggested that the tumors were derived from “das Helle-Zellen-Organ”, a diffusely distributed system of argyrophilic clear cells described by Feyrter in 1938, and found to be present in the normal breast by Vogler in 1947. In 1977 Cubilla and Woodruff presented their series of 10 patients with similar tumours and demonstrated small electron dense membrane-bound granules in the 3 cases studied by electron microscopy. A number of hormones had already been detected in homogenates of breast carcinoma tissue or in serum from breast cancer patients, such as ACTH (Liddle et al 1965), PTH (Mavligit et al 1971, Melick et al 1972), HCG (Sheth et. al 1974), calcitonin (Coombes et al 1975, Hillyard et al 1976). Interest in neuroendocrine breast tumours has been increasing by leaps and bounds recently, mainly due to the introduction of new techniques that enable the pathologist to localize hormones and peptides in sections prepared for light and electron microscopy.
