Abstract

In the 1950’s the concept of pharmacokinetics was introduced into clinical medicine by Dost1. Since then a rapidly increasing understanding of the mechanisms of drug disposition has occurred and has involved into the recognized discipline of clinical pharmacology. Coupled with this increased understanding, the introduction of sensitive assay techniques and computerized data analysis has led to many recent advances in our rational clinical use of drugs. Our knowledge of intravenous anesthestic agents in general, and their use in children in particular, has benefited from these advances in clinical pharmacology.
