Abstract
Diabetes is the commonest endocrine disorder occurring in about 2–3% of the Western population. It has a high incidence of associated complications which often require surgical intervention. Indeed, it has been estimated that, largely because of these complications, 50% of all diabetic patients will require surgery at some time during their lives (1).
