Abstract
The inflammatory bowel diseases are of unknown aetiology and many aspects of their pathogenesis remain unclear. The clinical usefulness of antimicrobial agents, microbiological and immunological studies all tend to implicate the gut microflora in the maintenance of IBD, and obligate anaerobes in particular. Bacteria may also be implicated in the development of cancer in IBD.
