Abstract
Transgenic mammals can be produced by microinjection of foreign DNA into pronuclei of zygotes. Fusion genes where the metallothionein I promotor has been connected co the structural gene for rat or human growth hormone has been introduced in mice by Palmiter et al. (1982, 1983). About 50 % of the animals have expressed these additional genes, most of them grew significantly larger than their littermates and enhanced growth rate was shown to be heritable.
