Abstract
From a position of public interest, protection of the marine environment against oil pollution has now taken its place amongst a number of environmental concerns such as radioactivity (e.g. escapes from nuclear plant), acid rain and discharges of heavy metals and other toxic chemicals. Nevertheless, oil pollution, from both accidental spillages at sea and as a result of deliberate operational discharges, remains a major source of environmental pollution, calling for both control through enforcement of international regulations and for the availability of rapid and efficient contingency plans and clean-up procedures.
