Bovine Pericardial Xenograft Bioprostheses

Book cover Pathology of Heart Valve Replacement

Abstract

In 1970 Dr M. I. Ionescu started testing glutaraldehyde-stabilized pericardial xenografts. Initially, limited numbers of the valves were created in his own laboratory in Leeds, England and used for single valve replacements only1. After clinical testing2, the Ionescu—Shiley bovine pericardial xenograft valve3,4 was marketed from 1976 by Shiley Incorporated.
