Homograft and Xenograft Aortic Valves, Fascia Lata and Dura Mater Valves

  • Chapter
Pathology of Heart Valve Replacement

Abstract

There is some confusion over exact definitions of non-chemically treated tissue valves. Homograft valves1,2 vary according to the method and timing of collection, sterilization, methods of valve storage, technique of implantation, and use of a free graft or one on a supporting stent. Ross3, and Barrat-Boyes4 independently were the first to successfully implant a homograft aortic valve orthotopically. Heimbecker et al. 5 also showed that aortic valve homografts were a feasible long-term therapy.
