Risk-benefit decisions in human administration

  • Chapter
Medicines and Risk/Benefit Decisions

Part of the book series: CMR Workshop Series ((CMRWS))

Abstract

It is difficult to estimate risk and it is even more difficult to estimate benefit. One might consider therefore, that is not worth dividing one into the other to produce a risk-benefit ratio which would be impossible to quantify. However, we do live in a real world in which we have to make decisions of risk to benefit and I am going to discuss the world I live in, which is trying to develop new drugs. Specifically I shall talk about the clinical development of drugs, where risk-benefit decisions have to be made rather frequently and regularly.
