Abstract
Over the last 15 years, a number of congenital and acquired disorders of the haematopoietic and lymphoid system have been demonstrated to benefit from allogeneic bone marrow transplantation (BMT). These diseases include varying kinds of leukaemias, aplastic anaemia, and congenital immunodeficiency disorders such as severe combined immunodeficiency syndrome (SCIDS) and the Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome. BMT is also beneficial in diseases with abnormalities in other haematopoietic progenitor cells such as hereditary platelet defects, abnormalities in macrophages or osteoclasts (Gaucher disease and osteopetrosis), or in diseases where a missing enzyme may be provided to the tissues, e.g. mucopolysaccharidoses.
