Abstract
Having described the more practical aspects of acupuncture, due consideration must be given to the two questions: does acupuncture work? and how does it work? Many conventional doctors will prefer to read this chapter first in order to be satisfied, before even thinking about practising acupuncture. Not only do the concepts stretch conventional credibility, but also the treatment itself – how can the act of inserting a needle, without doing anything else, have any therapeutic effect apart from placebo?
