Part of the book series: Current Histopathology ((CUHI,volume 13))

Abstract

Lesions of the skeletal system, as compared with many other organ systems, are only rarely encountered during routine toxicity screening studies. Most published reports of induced lesions of these tissues originate from studies in which dietary manipulation is used to develop animal models of human conditions. However, several compound-induced lesions and examples of exacerbation of spontaneous lesions are documented (Table 11.1). A factor which may have some influence on the frequency of detected induced lesions is the relatively sparse histological investigations carried out in some studies. For example, induced arthropathies do not always manifest in every joint and therefore may be missed if only one joint is examined.
