Abstract
The reactions of the tricarboxylic acid cycle in plants are very similar to those found in animals. However, because of the biosynthetic activity of the plant cell the function of the cycle is more complex than in animals, where the cycle functions principally to generate NADH to be used by the electron transport chain for ATP synthesis. In plants, the cycle also generates intermediates for amino acid biosynthesis and for nitrogen assimilation, and is involved in photorespiration in photosynthetic tissue. All these must be kept in mind when discussing the reactions of the cycle.
