Abstract
This book is the first of a series on the freshwater fishes of Europe. The expressed purpose of this series is to cover all aspects of taxonomy, morphology, ecology, and relationships to man of the species occurring in Europe. It was felt that series such as this are especially needed considering the ecological problems of today and the conservation of species declining in numbers. In order to achieve this goal each species account has been treated as a monograph. All the species of European lamprey have been included in this volume with special attention being given to their classification. The species accounts are the most detailed available and hopefully will serve as models for similar treatments of species from other parts of the world.
