Abstract
The Alticinae, with its approximately 8000 species (Furth 1980), is one of the most important chrysomelid subfamilies (Costa Lima 1955, Jolivet and Petitpierre 1976). These beetles are characterized by a peculiar spring-like structure contained in the enlarged metafemora which permits most species to jump with considerable force (Furth 1980,1983). Although many flea beetles occur in temperate regions, most are tropical, and among the 560 recognized genera, 210 are Neotropical (Furth 1982). The taxonomy and distribution of tropical American alticines has received considerable attention, in particular by Bechyné (1955a, b; 1957, 1959) and Scherer (1960. 1962); however, tropical faunas are still imperfectly known and basic natural history information is lacking for most species.
