Cytotaxonomy of Alticinae

Biology of Chrysomelidae

Part of the book series: Series Entomologica ((SENT,volume 42))

Abstract

Only about 200 species of flea beetles have previously been checked cytologically (Petitpierre et al. 1988) and comprise only 2.6% of the total number of species known in this large subfamily. As quantitative DNA, gene enzyme, and banding data are all but lacking and knowledge of host plants scanty, nor is there much support from an intra-subfamily classification because most specialists think establishment of tribes premature, only tentative phylogenetic consideration of the cytological data is possible. In light of the caution by Seeno and Wilcox (1982), I shall evaluate their ‘tribal’ groups by coordinating chromosomal data, the knowledge on metafemoral springs (Furth 1980,1982, 1985), and the number of spermatozoa per bundle (Virkki 1969. 1973).
