Algal Communities of Continental Waters

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: Handbook of vegetation science ((HAVS,volume 15-1))

Abstract

Recognition, description and classification of natural communities originated from the beginning of the XIXth century. However, it is mainly from the turn of the century that an ever-increasing literature has been devoted to these aspects of ecology, and that the concepts and methods initially developed for the study of forest, scrub, heath or grassland vegetation, would be applied to the study of algal communities.
