Abstract
The phytocenose as well as the biotope are parts of the ecosystem, and the phytocenose is the integrated expression of the biotope. In order to appreciate the distribution of phytocenoses, and to enable the mapper to interpret his vegetation maps, it is necessary to focus attention on the main physical and chemical characteristics of the environment. The mapper is urged to acquaint himself with the excellent ‘language analysis and the concept environment’ (Mason and Langenheim, 1957) in order to assure clarity in thought and presentation when discussing an extremly complex concept.
