Abstract
The dating and analysis of lake sediment cores in unravelling the historical influence of man in his use of lake basins are rapidly becoming routine. However, interpretation of core profiles must be carefully carried out to resolve the effects of in-lake processes, such as mixing and eutrophication, on the compositional characteristics of the sediment. Both sediment texture and major element composition can be used with considerable success in qualitatively assessing changes in both temporal and spatial basin soil erosion rates. Much of the work, however, is new and considerable research is needed to establish detailed and possibly quantitative measures of soil erosion rates by examination of the sediment column in recipient lakes.
