Abstract

The XMM-mission is one of the four cornerstone projects in the ESA long term programme for space science. The satellite obseratory comprises a high throughput facility for x-ray spectroscopy with the aid of dispersive and non-dispersive imaging spectrometers. The areas of major impact for astrophysical research are briefly reviewed, subsequently the diagnostic power of such a facility for the study of several sites of hot thin astrophysical plasma is illustrated with a few computer simulations, based on the configuration of a model payload.
