Abstract

Ram pressure stripping can occur when the intracluster gas in a galaxy cluster impinges on the interstellar gas of a member galaxy. The effects have to be discussed separately for spiral galaxies (sporadic effects) and for ellipticals (more nearly continuous). Various kinds of “galactic fountains” tend to replenish the hot corona in a galaxy halo. An extended HI disk in an isolated spiral galaxy can decrease the coronal density by initiating a cooling flow, which is very sensitive to the coronal temperature.
