Abstract

There are three observational facts which strongly support the hot Big- Bang cosmology: the universal Hubble expansion, the existence of the cosmic microwave background (CMB), and the agreement between the predictions of the primordial nucleosynthesis theories and the observed abundance of light elements. The cosmological Friedmann models are parametrized by the density parameter Ω0. This measures the present cosmological density in units of the critical density: ρ crit ≡ 3H 20 /[8πG] = 2 · 10-29 h2 g cm-3; H 0 is the Hubble constant and h = H0 /[100 km s-1 Mpc-1]. If Ω0 is less than or equal to unity (open or flat model respectively), the universe will expand forever; if Ω0 is greater than unity, the universe will recollapse eventually.
