Abstract

Chromatographic methods for the analysis of coal derivatives are reviewed. Column chromatography may be used to fractionate on the basis of polarity or functionality; size exclusion chromatography separates on the basis of molecular size and allows molecular mass distributions to be deduced. High resolution analytical separations of low MM compounds are readily achieved by capillary gas chromatography; high performance liquid chromatography, especially on microcolumns, and supercritical fluid chromatography are both applicable to higher MM compounds.
