Abstract
In recent years, the body of X-ray and radio data on young, low-mass stars has grown steadily, thanks mainly to the “Einstein” X-ray satellite observations and archives, and to the Very Large Array radio interferometer.
The X-rays come mostly, if not predominantly, from giant, solar-like flares. The associated hot plasma is trapped in magnetic loops of sizes on the order of the stellar radius at most. The radio observations are more difficult to interpret: the detection rate is low, and the spectra are diverse. While there are definite cases of accretion, winds, or jets, it seems that the radiation is most frequently magnetic (“non-thermal”) in character. Several radio flares have been detected in late-type PMS stars, and a very young B star with a dipolar field has been discovered. The associated closed magnetic structures are very large, extending up to more than 10 stellar radii. In addition, optical and/or IR data on the X-ray emitting, as well as the non-thermal radio emitting, young stars indicate that little or no circumstellar material is present around them (“naked” PMS stars).
We point out that the radio-emitting naked stars make up a new population of PMS stars, characterized by extended closed magnetic structures, and we discuss their relation with the more familiar populations of naked and classical T Tauri stars.
