Abstract
The villanelle is a seventeenth century French verse form derived from a sixteenth century Italian song form. It has nineteen lines, five tercets rhyming aba closed by a quatrain rhyming abaa. In addition, certain lines must be repeated: the first line of the initial tercet appears as the last line of the second and fourth tercets; the last line of the initial tercet also ends the third and fifth tercets; then these two refrain lines are the last two lines of the poem.
