Abstract

An overall view is presented of the outer atmospheric properties of pre-main-sequence (PMS) stars and how these change as the stars evolve towards the main sequence. The youngest stars are characterised by very strong interaction with the surrounding molecular cloud, often involving an accretion disk and a strong bipolar outflow. With time the dominance of the stellar appearance by external processes diminishes and the true stellar properties become more apparent. The chromospheric, coronal and wind properties of PMS stars vary on both short-term and evolutionary timescales. The short-term variability provides important information on atmospheric inhomogeneity that is complementary to more detailed modelling. The naked T Tauri (NTT) stars, which actually comprise the vast majority of PMS stars, are discussed in detail, because they play a vital role in understanding the evolution of PMS activity and the temporal behaviour of star-formation.
