Falsificationism Looked at from an “Economic” Point of View

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: Boston Studies in the Philosophy of Science ((BSPS,volume 111))

Abstract

What may be gained by applying concepts generalized from economics such as, e.g., cost-benefit analysis (‘CBA’ for short), to methodological problems? It is claimed that the “economic” perspective may help the researcher to see what sorts of questions he should take into account when dealing with particular methodological decision problems. This claim is supported by applying the “economic” perspective to two standard problems of the philosophy of science.

The ideas of this paper originated in the preparation for a Colloquium on the applications of the Economic Approach, the results of which are presented in Radnitzky and Bernholz, 1987.
