Abstract

Under the stress of northerly winds off East Greenland in winter during the sixties the Great Salinity Anomaly of the Seventies was formed and it drifted across the North Atlantic for nearly twenty years. It crossed the spawning grounds of a number of “deep water” stocks and the recruitments to eleven out of fifteen were significantly reduced during the years of passage of the Great Slug. North of Iceland and on the Grand Bank both primary and secondary production were reduced, which suggests that the reduced recruitment was linked to lack of food for the larvae.
