Abstract

This review discusses the basic principles of receiver and detector systems for use at millimetre and submillimetre wavelengths. The basic physics relevant to operation of these detector systems will be individually discussed, and examples of their use in astronomical applications described. The article sets out specifically to explain the fundamentals of millimetre and submillimetre wavelength receivers in an easy to understand and simplified way. It does not on the other hand try to represent the current “state of the art” for the specialist, to whom there are already a number of excellent and recent articles (see Phillips and Woody 1985 and references therein). Many of the examples in this article are drawn from the instrumentation which is available (or will be shortly) for the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT) in Hawaii. This is the largest Submillimetre wavelength antenna in the world and, because of the excellent site it has been placed on, will be a world leader in Submillimetre Astronomy for the foreseeable future.
