Abstract

The mechanisms generating the FRAM IV mid-frequency Arctic ambient noise are examined. The 100-Hz, 200-Hz and 300-Hz ambient noise levels are correlated with temperature, temperature rate of change, heat flux, wind speed, the ice stress moment and the 10 to 20-Hz ambient noise levels. The time series and spectral character of several individual noise events are presented. The events are local, within 15 km of the receiving array, and peak in the mid-frequencies. There is no correlation with the measures of thermal stress, a weak correlation with wind speed and the ice stress moment and a .67 correlation with the 10 to 20-Hz levels.
