Abstract

A considerable interest in rain generated underwater ambient noise is reflected internationally in an increasing number of scientific papers published. This paper gives a critical evaluation of more recent publications on the subject and essential deviations between theoretical and experimental results obtained by various authors are pointed out and their prospective reasons are discussed. A detailed exposition of factors influencing rain generated ambient noise in the sea is given for single and multiple raindrops. These factors, which influence the sound generating mechanisms by the raindrop impacts on the water surface are for instance, raindrop diameter and diameter distribution, terminal velocity, raindrop shape, wind profiles, surface tension and temperature, and measurement conditions. Some preliminary experimental results arising from a comprehensive, 2-years research programme on rain generated noise in the sea very recently started at the Technical University of Denmark are given. Finally, the most essential elements and the aim of the 2-years research scheme is discussed and it is concluded that a comprehensive and well-prepared international collaborative research programme is necessary in order to solve the involved scientific questions related to rain generated ambient noise in the sea.
