The Sound Generated by Precipitation Striking the Ocean Surface

Abstract

Precipitation striking the ocean surface produces sound underwater. The mechanisms by which raindrops produce sound underwater are the initial impact and entrained bubbles. The influences that wind and waves have on these mechanisms are examined. The implications that these results have on the possibility of using the level of sound generated by rainfall as a means of measuring rainfall in oceanic regions is discussed.
