Abstract
Waves breaking at the sea surface are prime suspects as a source of underwater sound, but the precise way in which the sound is generated remains a matter for careful enquiry. In the present paper we shall review some of the known ways in which surface waves can break, with an eye to possible mechanisms of sound generation, and will describe in particular work in progress on the interactions between long and short waves.
