Abstract
The contamination of soil and aquatic environments by chlorinated aromatic pollutants (CAPs) such as polychlorophenols (PCPs) is well known. In the environment PCPs originate from pulp bleaching and the disinfection of waters, but are also contaminants and degradation products of pesticide. Furthermore, pentachlorophenol (Cl5-Pn) itself has been widely used in agriculture and industry as a fungicide, bactericide, herbicide, molluscicide, algicide, and insecticide. Currently, Cl5-Pn is utilized mainly as a wood preservative, which has led to its widespread presence in the environment.
