Abstract

It is agreed that during the last billion years the Sun, as the analysis of the terrestrial climate has demonstrated, behaved as a stationary system (Mitchell, 1977) and that stars like the Sun evolve on a timescale of a billion years (Soderblom and Baliunas, 1988). Thus one should expect that its activity is subjected to more or less regular oscillations. The study of the likely laws ruling these oscillations (periodicities, power spectra etc.) constitutes one of the essential pieces of information needed to understand solar physics.
