Abstract

Recent advances in paleomagnetism have made it possible to obtain reproducible, high-resolution records of geomagnetic secular variation from lacustrine sediments. The changes in geomagnetic field directions recorded by these sediments provide new information about the orientation of the Earth’s magnetic field, the relative importance of the dipole and non-dipole fields, and the rates at which the field directions can change. Although there are still some problems with the methodology, the lake sediments also appear to be able to provide a detailed record of changes in geomagnetic field intensity. This information will be very important in separating the effects of the geomagnetic field from those of solar variability with regard to the production of cosmogenic radioisotopes in the Earth’s atmosphere.
