Abstract
Aspects of aeronomy are reviewed from early observations of the nightglow to the present day problem concerning the relevance of energy transfer for the excitation of oxygen species in the lower thermosphere. Attention is focussed on selected results and conclusions believed to be especially significant in their influence on progress in this field.
