Abstract

The Baltic Sea (Fig. 1), connected with the North Sea by narrow straits, has tides that are practically imperceptible and salinities that are low (from 14 /oo to 18 /oo in the west and as low as 2 /oo at the heads of the Gulfs of Riga, Finland, and Bothnia). The meridionally extending Baltic Sea favours the occurrence of violent storms from the north and southwest.
