Abstract

Because there has been no appropriate legislative definition of the coastal zone, it appears logical to consider it to include those areas subject to the mutual effects of land and sea. In any foresighted planning of the coastal zone, which by nature is fragile (or made fragile by humans), it would seem suitable to include:

  1. 1.

The marine environment up to the zero of the Algerian levelling system (Nivellement General de L’Algerie, N.G.A.),

  2. 2.

The continental environment with the foreshore as a contact zone of sandy and rocky beaches, and

  3. 3.

The coastal hinterland with dunes, salt marshes, and other zones, humid or rocky, influenced by the sea.
