Some Implications of Distant Cooling Flows

  • Chapter
Cooling Flows in Clusters and Galaxies

Part of the book series: NATO ASI Series ((ASIC,volume 229))

Abstract

There are cooling flows in many nearby clusters and X-ray evidence for them out to redsMfts of ~ 0.5. Cooling flows would have been more common at earlier epochs if clusters are built up in a hierarchical fashion out of sub clusters. Disruption of the cooling flows as the sub clusters merge provides a mechanism for changing the accretion flow on to active nuclei and for the recent evolution observed in powerful radio galaxies and quasars. Much of the dark matter around large elliptical galaxies may be due to early strong cooling flows, which also play a significant part in their formation.
