He II λ4686/Hβ as a Constraint on the Ionizing Continuum

  • Chapter
Cooling Flows in Clusters and Galaxies

Part of the book series: NATO ASI Series ((ASIC,volume 229))

Abstract

Working on the assumption that the emission line filaments associated with radio-galaxies are photoionized, the relative reliability of the He II λ4686/H/β line ratio as a test of the hardness of the continuum ionizing distribution is reviewed. It may provide a useful discriminant for determining whether or not young stars are responsible for exciting the emission line filaments.
