Abstract
Many active early-type galaxies exhibit extended distributions of ionized gas which are detected by optical spectroscopy and narrow-band imaging. A summary is presented of the basic observational properties of these extended emission line regions (EELR) with a view to establishing their connection with the “cooling flow” phenomenon
