Photoionization versus shocks in the filaments of NGC 1275

Abstract

We show that the excitation of the filaments observed around NGC 1275 is more probably due to photoionization by the active nucleus radiation than to local radiative shocks. The photoionized gas is in pressure equilibrium with the hot ambient gas of the cooling flow.
